See below for the story behind the work.
This painting was made in winter 2004, cloud was low, sea-spray hung in the air, yet blinks of colour seeped through.
For a year I walked down to and made paintings of Hayle Estuary in Cornwall, where Hawks Point meets Hayle Sands, (it is forms a part of the larger St. Ives Bay with St. Nicholas’ Chapel in St. Ives on the west side and Godrevy lighthouse on the other - made famous by Virginia Woolf’s novel ‘To The Lighthouse’).
The bay is divided by the river, the estuary markers providing the only vertical in the landscape, the rest being vast and horizontal. This relatively simple landscape offered much in the way of change - light, colour, mist, shifting sands, storm, tide.
The work is framed with a simple white painted wooden band.
