Evening Star Dreaming – Paintings

This painting is a part of Evening Star Dreaming, a series of paintings made over a few years of the evening primrose plants in my garden. It’s latin name, Oenothera biennis has many names including evening star and moth's moonflower. It is a verspertine flower - one which blooms in the evening.

In working with this plant in the beautiful dimming light, I was able to witness it’s blooms unfurling. Often I would watch it open, the sepals first curling back 180 degrees, allowing the clean bright yellow crinkled petals to stretch, to ping outwards. The whole process of opening and surprisingly uncrease took about ten minutes.

In the series title, the word dreaming refers to ancient and traditional cultures; Aboriginal and Celtic, cultures of knowing land and spirit. Oenothera biennis is native to Europe and North America, it has a long history of use as a medicine plant and all of it's parts are edible. For this series I have entered a meditative state in order to listen and attempt to learn from this plant.

The petals and young leaves are delicious in salads!

The work is framed with a simple white painted wooden band.
